Ten Little Indians (1959)Edit

Ten Little Indians was aired live on January 18, 1959. Much of the plot was condensed considerably, as it was only an hour-long television special. This film is one of the lesser-known adaptions, and copies are usually rare and hard to come by.

The RhymeEdit

Since the special was only fifty-nine minutes, not only did they condense the plot, the finding of the bodies (sometimes found seconds between each other), but they also condensed the Ten Little Indians nursery rhyme. In this version, the rhyme goes like this:

Ten little Indians invited out to dine, one choked his little self, and then there were nine.

Nine little Indians sat up quite late, one overslept himself, and then there were eight.

Eight little Indians stopped off at Devon, one starved and caught fire, and then there were seven.

Seven little Indians very much alive, two missed their dinner, and then there were five.

Five little Indians sitting on the shore, one became a Brahmin, and then there were four.

Four little Indians going out to sea, a red herring swallowed one, and then there were three.

Three little Indians walking in a zoo, a big bear hugged one, and then there were two.

Two little Indians sitting in the sun, one got all frizzled up, and then there was one.

One little Indian left all alone, he went and hanged himself, and then there were none.

PlotEdit

The plot, of course, stays mainly the same, but it follows the play more closely than the book (particularly the ending). The special being only one hour, the events do not happen in a week, or even a weekend. The events all happen in one night, and the following morning.

CastEdit

As far as I can riddle, this is the cast of the special. Trustworthy sites (such as IMDb and TCM) give different actors to different roles. So here is, to the best of my knowledge, the cast. (The first five are correct, but the rest, well that's up to you.)

Nina Foch as Vera Claythorne

Barry Jones as Justice Sir Lawrence Wargrave

Kenneth Haigh as Philip Lombard

Romney Brent as Dr. Armstrong

Peter Bathurst as General Mackenzie

James Kenny as Blore

Valerie French as Emily Brent

Chandler Cowles as Frederick Marston

George Turner as Rogers

Caroline Brenner as Mrs Rogers

CrewEdit

Directed by Paul Bogart, Philip F. Falcone, Leo Farrenkopf, and Dan Zampino

Written by Agatha Christie (play/novel) and Philip H. Reisman Jr. (television adaption)

Music supervised by John Geller
